About Bud King, how he became interested in woodworking and started his business.
Chetco River Bridge between Brookings and Harbor, home of King's Custom Woodworks, Made in USABud became interested in woodworking when clearing a grove of trees for a homesite on his property. While processing and preserving the logs himself, he became intrigued with the elegance of the "burls" and contrasting colors found in his wood.

Native woods of Myrtlewood, Maple and Redwood are utilized for his artistry. Upon request he will incorporate rare and exotic woods in your design.

In constructing his beautifully angled large pieces right down to his smaller items, Bud takes great pride in the "natural" characteristics and grains of the wood to create his unique designs.

Each of the large, beautifully angled chests, armoires, tables and other fine pieces of furniture are unique in design and carry part of Bud in them.

No Two Pieces are the Same.

All his designs are original, never having a published pattern. It's sheer artistry at it's very best!

Bud has been in business for 4 years now and specializes in custom orders such as large chests, tables, cremation urns and boxes using such wonderful woods as:

  • Big Leaf Western Maple
  • Coastal Redwood Burl
  • Black Walnut
  • Oregon Myrtlewood

If you don't see it be sure to ASK BUD. He may be able to fulfill your request with a wood not listed.

Redwood Trees in Forest MistRedwood
Redwood trees are native to the extreme north coast of California and are sometimes found in southern Oregon. Coast Redwood often grows over 300 feet tall and has a trunk 8 to 12 feet in diameter. The tallest known living Redwood is 369 feet tall.
Redwood is a very ancient tree known for its red colors. Some of it's finest qualities are known as 'Bird's Eye Burl' which Bud prefers to use in his design work. You may also find what is called 'Curly Redwood' as well as just a straight grain. Redwood is a very hard wood to work with. It is soft and extremely tender.

Maple Leaves in Fall ColorsMaple
Big-Leaf Maples are native to the Pacific Northwest. Growth is rapid for the first 40-50 years, then slows as the trees approach a maximum age of about 275 years. The heights reach 50 to 100 feet high and 4 feet in diameter, supporting enormous, radiating limbs.
Mosses and ferns form thick mats on the branches, often amounting to a ton or more per tree when wet. The largest of any species of maple in North America, the Big-leaf is 8 feet thick and 96 feet tall.
The Big-Leaf has the largest leaf reaching 15 inches in diameter. The heartwood is light reddish-brown, finely grained, very dense and moderately hard and strong. Craftsmen highly value the wood for its huge 'burls' containing Birdseye, quilted, fiddleback, and wavy grain patterns.

Myrtlewood Berries and LeavesMyrtlewood
Myrtlewood is truly unique as it grows only along the southern Oregon coast. The wood is so dense it will not often float, if dropped into a lake or river. Oregon's largest known Myrtlewood tree, is approximately 88 feet tall 42 feet in circumference, and its canopy is nearly 70 feet wide. NO other hardwood found on the globe has the elegance of 'Oregon Myrtlewood'; it excels in the beauty of grain patterns and the variety of colors ranging from light to velvety black creating striking designs. The slow growing tree develops 'burls' containing intricate markings.
These unique properties have given the “Oregon Myrtlewood” a unique place in American history. In 1869, the 'golden spike', marking the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, was driven into a tie of highly polished Myrtlewood. The wood was also used as coins during the Great Depression, and an entire suite of furniture was constructed of Myrtlewood for the famed California writer Jack London.
